Jill & Rupert (not to mention our dog and two cats...) look forward to welcoming you to this lovely, comfortable Victorian house with its delightful gardens. As a small, high-quality bed & breakfast establishment, we aim to provide a comfortable, welcoming - and peaceful - home for you to enjoy; and we do GREAT breakfasts!

Dowfold House Bed & Breakfast is in a quiet location overlooking Crook, with stunning views over Weardale as far as the North Pennines. We welcome business visitors, tourers, cyclists, walkers, dogs and children. People just keep coming back!

Dowfold House is a lovely Victorian house in a quiet rural location overlooking Crook, with wonderful views over Wear Valley and beyond to Weardale. Built in 1860 for Joseph Pease, local mine owner and first Quaker MP, the house has some historical interest. It is an ideal place to stay when visiting the North East of England. Durham City is just a 15 minute drive away and the house is just a few minutes from the A68, a major route to and from Scotland.

Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and the North East coast are all within easy reach of our accomodation, while Crook acts as a gateway to the Durham Dales (Weardale, Teesdale) and the North Pennines.

Environmental Statement
Dowfold House’s Green PoliciesRight from the word go, we have determined to run Dowfold House as efficiently and with as little harm to the environment as possible. As members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme, we're serious about minimising our footprint. Energy Our electricity comes from Scottish Power under their Green Energy scheme. Almost all our light bulbs are now energy saving ones. We have been totally rewired and try to run as much domestic machinery at night on cheaper rate electricity. Time switches are used. We switch off as many lights and standbys as possible when not in use. Our chimneys and flues are swept once a year for maximum efficiency. Although it is oil fired, our boiler is modern and fuel efficient. We are investigating its replacement with an alternatively fuelled boiler within the next few years. Hot water cylinders are lagged to the maximum capacity. And much more.
