The location, the privacy and the little courtyard garden outside the rooms

I would suggest a little bit of trellis/fence between each room so you can sit outside without disturbing your neughbour

"Lovely courtyard self contained room"
I stayed one night and had a very relaxing stay. Although the DoW is set on a hill slightly out of town this suited me as Matlock was extremely busy and it suited me better to be in a more tranquil location but conveniently on a major thoroughfare. Read less

I really liked the room which was set on a courtyard. I sat outside in the sun and had a picnic. There is also a pub garden with tables to enjoy a drink and food.

Built in 1866, the 'Duke' has all the character and charm of a traditional country inn, built in Derbyshire limestone with slate roofs, roaring log fires and extensive gardens, our pub is well worth a visit.

Our inn has been redecorated, relatively recently, in a country style that provides a warm and comfortable atmosphere for both drinkers and diners alike. The menu is simple and traditional with a big focus on traditional pub favourites and our 28-day-aged Derbyshire beef that gives us a wide selection of steaks and grills.

The extensive floral gardens offer comfortable seating area with stunning views overlooking 'Riber Castle and the Derwent Valley'.

Our Rooms are situated around a courtyard giving outside seating area for you to sit and relax after a day walking around the beautiful countryside. With Lumsdale falls only a 10 minute walk away you have a stunning natural waterfall to visit.

Our Rooms are en-suite and available as follow . We have 6 Double rooms, 1 Twin room, 1 four poster Room , and 1 Family room (1 double bed and bunk beds up to the age of 16)
We allow dogs (at an extra charge) in rooms 6,7 and 8 (best to ring and check)
