"Absolutely flawless"
I found Bulleigh Barton Manor via the direct link on Tripadvisor and booked through their own website. Booking was clear, simple and fast. I contacted the owners via email to let them know about our dietary requirements (one vegan and one wheat & yeast free) and had a speedy reply confirming we'd be we'll catered for. The owners were extremely accommodating of our late arrival and we couldn't have been happier with our welcome. Our stay was fantastic! Read less
Likes:
Our room was beautifully decorated and clean. The bathroom luxurious. We appreciated the fresh fruit and nuts, plus homemade fudge and varied selection of teas on arrival. Breakfast was freshly cooked
Dislikes:
Unfortunately we were stuck in traffic for eight hours so arrived late, in the dark. That meant we didn't have chance to make the most of stunning views or the garden.

"A Comfortable Break in Beautiful Countryside"
We needed accommodation for two nights in Devon to complete our holiday, and this choice proved to be ideal. We wanted a twin room with en suite facilities and good off-road parking, but near to main routes. Bulleigh Barton Manor could provide this. It would be a good base for almost any type of holiday in the south-west. The room provided was comfortable and spacious with plenty of storage, and we enjoyed peaceful sleep in an excellent bed. Decor, presentation and cleanliness were high quality. Read less

Dislikes:
We would like to have had longer to enjoy the house and surrounding area, but unfortunately our schedule did not allow this.

Bulleigh Barton Manor has three beautifully decorated rooms, with en-suite facilities, each one reflecting the historic nature of the house. The Brooking Room, with its hand made oak king size four poster bed and luxurious bathroom, is the original master bedroom. The light and airy Garden Suite offers a super king size double bed (or twin beds if preferred) and a separate living area in which to relax. The Willow Room is a double room with an ensuite shower room. All rooms have TV/DVD and tea and coffee making facilities.

The owners are keen cooks and strong supporters of local food producers. Guests are greeted with a home made Devon cream tea which can be taken in the drawing room in front of the log fire on colder days or, when the weather is good, in the garden. Evening meals are available by prior arrangement and, for those who enjoy eating out, there is a good selection of local pubs and restaurants in the area.

The house has a long history. There was a house noted on this site in the Doomsday book. It is thought that the current building, which was originally a farm house, dates back to the 1400s and was part of the Compton Castle estate. The earliest records we have been able to find show that it was sold by the Estate in 1688, possibly to pay off civil war debts. The purchaser, Thomas Brooking, son of the Mayor of Totnes, was a wealthy merchant. It is said that Thomas moved to the clean air of Bulleigh Barton to escape the plague which was raging in Totnes. The house stayed in the family for 200 years and has been visited by some of Thomas Brooking’s descendants in recent times.

Bulleigh Barton is situated in a sheltered valley with extensive views across the garden and the surrounding countryside. Guests are welcome to make full use of the garden which features two ponds, an ancient well and a large swimming pool which is heated in the summer months.
