Dowfold House has won Bed & Breakfast of the Year 2011, in the North-East. This, with our other awards in 2011 - Green Tourism Gold award; Gold Award and Breakfast Award from EnjoyEngland; and TWO awards from Brilliant Breakfasts has made this a good year. Now we have to live up to it. We provide four star rated accommodation in a peaceful rural location in the heart of Weardale. This charming and comfortable Victorian house has delightful gardens and all rooms have lovely valley views.

The friendliness showed to us as guests, but respecting our privacy at the same time. Nothing seemed too much trouble, even insisting on drying out a wet coat and shoes after a day of rain.

As a small, high-quality bed and breakfast establishment, we aim to provide a comfortable, welcoming - and peaceful - home for you to enjoy; and we do GREAT breakfasts! - full of local produce.
As a recent, regular, guest put it: “Jill & Rupert at Dowfold House are a class act. They offer bed and breakfasting in grand style, but somehow make it friendly and intimate.” It's a brilliant encapsulation of all that we try to do - and I half-wish I'd thought of it myself, although it sounds better from a third-party.
Our rooms are comfortable and well-equipped, all with ensuite facilities, while our home & gardens offer plenty of opportunity for relaxation - or wickedly competitive croquet! Guests love it here. We're proud of our Bed & Breakfast's green credentials, but intensely aware we need to do more. "Green, but without the hair shirt" is our motto. You can find prices and booking information HERE.

Dowfold House Bed & Breakfast is in a quiet location overlooking Crook, with stunning views over Weardale as far as the North Pennines. We welcome business visitors, tourers, cyclists, walkers, dogs, horses [NEW] and children. People just keep coming back!
Crook is an ideal, peaceful, place to stay when visiting the North East of England. The City of Durham is a 20 minute drive away and our Bed & Breakfast accommodation is close to the A68, a major route to and from Scotland.

Dowfold House’s Green PoliciesRight from the word go, we have determined to run Dowfold House as efficiently and with as little harm to the environment as possible. As members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme, we're serious about minimising our footprint. Energy
Our electricity comes from Scottish Power under their Green Energy scheme.
Almost all our light bulbs are now energy saving ones.
We have been totally rewired and try to run as much domestic machinery at night on cheaper rate electricity. Time switches are used.
We switch off as many lights and standbys as possible when not in use.
Our chimneys and flues are swept once a year for maximum efficiency.
Although it is oil fired, our boiler is modern and fuel efficient. We are investigating its replacement with an alternatively fuelled boiler within the next few years.
Hot water cylinders are lagged to the maximum capacity.And much more.But: DON'T WORRY! You won't find a hair shirt ANYWHERE!
