Debra, I'm sorry you were chilly. We are having the boiler replaced this week so we hope all heating issues will be resolved.

"Lovely location, friendly service"
My friend and I had a last minute short break here and it was great to find somewhere so well located for exploring the countryside north of York that was quiet and a little bit away from the world.
We had great pre-arrival instructions meaning that there was no pressure to arrive at an exact time as you were free to explore for yourself. Access to the kitchen was great as we were able to chill wine and make a cuppa without feeling like we were imposing. Read less
Likes:
The location, the friendly pets (not allowed inside but very friendly if you are sitting outside), Louise's friendly demeanour and the how small the B&B was - just 2 rooms!
Dislikes:
Part of the appeal of staying away is someone else cooking breakfast for you. Felt compelled to say we'd sort ourselves on 1st morning to fit into our host's plans. Didn't quite get our £s worth there
Response from The Granary:
Kathryn, it was lovely to have you both to stay. I'm sorry you felt pressured to look after yourselves on the first morning. I had intended to close-out the Saturday night to bookings completely because of the party we were hosting but forgot to, so I'm glad we could still accommodate you for your stay and thank you for being so flexible - and I'm glad I could have a return to normal service and cook for you the next morning.

Footpaths lead in all directions within a few steps of the front door of the cottage, with access to the Vale of York, the Howardian Hills and the Yorkshire Moors. As well as being a popular area for cycling and riding, visitors to the region are attracted by the amenities close to The Granary Barn, which include award winning pub, ‘The Durham Ox’ at Crayke, and the nearby market town of Helmsley with its attractive stone houses and cottages, tea rooms, and delicatessens, and, of course, the famous Michelin starred pub ‘The Star at Harome’.

The local attractions of Riveaulx Abbey, Duncombe Park, Helmsley Walled Garden, and Castle Howard are all within easy driving distance, whilst York and all its attractions are only half an hour away. Helmsley also has an open air swimming pool open in the summer. Those who prefer swimming in the sea can explore the beautiful sands of the Scarborough and Whitby coast, only one hour away. Golf and riding are available locally and there is racing at York, Thirsk and Ripon.

There are chickens and ducks in the garden – both are free range, so if you are scared of birds this may not be the place for you! Also, they do make happy clucking noises which may disturb you if you are a light sleeper (no cockerel though!).

One well-behaved dog is welcome to stay (as long as they get on with other dogs).
