Thorpe House had been a mill owner’s mansion and home until the early 1900s, it was the officers’ quarters for the Royal Engineers during the Second World War. It then lay empty for twelve years until Douglas and Jean Kneen bought it from Commander Selwyn Rawson OBE in 1957. It then became our family home offering gentile living for retired professionals.

"A warm Yorkshire welcome"
We stayed at Thorpe House, using it as a base for a three night short break to explore the Calderdale area. Tucked away away off a main road, Thorpe House gives easy access to Hebden Bridge, Halifax and other surrounding villages and towns. We were delighted with our large, very clean and comfortable bedroom with en suite (shower and bath). Our hosts couldn't do enough to make our stay relaxing. We will return. Read less

Thorpe House is a fascinating period hotel / B&B in beautiful surroundings (the view from our bedroom was magnificent). A lovely warm welcome from our hosts, with a breakfast to set us up for the day.

An extremely restful stay.
Dislikes:
There was only Alpen or Corn Flakes and Yoghurt for cereals. Other establishments charging the same sort of price would have had a wider selection and some fruit. Lovely cooked breakfast though.

THORPE HOUSE is situated in the rural heart of West Yorkshire within minutes of Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge and Halifax. This original 18-century mill owner’s mansion has achieved a Grade II listing and been elegantly restored throughout, merging many original features with modern luxuries.

The property stands in its own private grounds surrounded by dense woodland around an impressive private lake. Guests can enjoy quality local produce for breakfast whilst overlooking the grounds or relax in fine surroundings in their elegant bedrooms or our comfortable period lounge.

The house has been described by one of our guests as ‘a lovely place which puts its arms around you and gives you a hug’. It took lots of hard work to create the elegant and relaxing ambience of the place, sourcing original colours, materials and talented craftsmen to decorate the individual rooms. All the renovations are true to the history of the House (take a special look at the old Housekeeper’s room and the walk-in wardrobes.) The cantilever staircase frequently gets a ‘wow’ when guests arrive and the Georgian formality has been called the ‘Downton feel’ by guests.
