Breakfasts were very good with plenty of choice, offering locally sourced jams.

The highlight for me was finding three excellent and well-kept real ales and a stout in the comfortable bar lounge.

The majority of our guest rooms have beautiful views over the Derwent Valley, providing a peaceful environment in which to relax and unwind. The main A6 is only a short distance below, and follows the river through the "Little Switzerland" scenery of limestone cliffs and steep wooded slopes, as described by Lord Byron. A lovely area for short walks and a great starting point for a longer walk into the Derbyshire Dales.

This independent family run business dates back to the 1780's and will have had numerous distinguished people cross its threshold. Lord Byron was so moved by his visit to Matlock Bath that whilst dining he was inspired to etch a poem on the dining room window. This room, aptly name The Byron Room is now our main breakfast room. The pane of glass with Lord Byron's famous unfinished poem was later signed by a young princess Victoria when she visited Matlock Bath before becoming the Queen.
