A short but sweet stay in a breathtaking town. The Captain's House is comfortable, though a bit worn. However, the location makes up for any loss of luxuries in the house. Nothing wrong with this place at all, and the owners are so much help with deciding what to do while you're there. Absolutely recommended. Read less

I loved the decorations around the house as well as the general location. There is so much to do within walking distance and the owners will be happy to provide local history and advice on activities.

"Good location, but disappointing stay."
We've booked 4 nights, because it looked very pleasant on the Homepage. But the room was small and damp, and no heating the first days (the weather was cold and rainy). So we asked the owner, if there's a possibility to leave earlier, but it wasn't possible. We understand this fact, but it was the unkindliness and no willingness to compromise of the owner, that gave us a negative Impression of this stay. Read less

Open all year except Christmas, The Captains House offers lavishly decorated standard and en suite rooms, all centrally heated with tea and coffee making facilities. Children are very welcome with well behaved adults!

The Captains House hosts a beautiful tea garden, a real sun trap in which to sit and enjoy a famous Devonshire Cream Tea. Marvel at the magnificent scenery and pretty flowers while watching the world go by, with the relaxing sounds of the river's babbling in the background. Go on, treat yourself to our mouthwatering freshly baked scones with jam and lashings of farmhouse clotted cream - mmm, wickedly delicious!

The area is a paradise for nature lovers and walkers. The poets Shelley, Wordsworth and Coleridge visited the area and wrote lovingly of our village many times. The classic novel Lorna Doone by R D Blackmore was penned and set here.
