Close to Newbury and within easy reach of Lambourn, with very easy access from the A4 or M4, The Lord Lyon is a superb pub with 5 newly refurbished B&B rooms. Since 1989 The Lord Lyon has had the added attraction of Arkell's beers to offer its customers - yet another great reason why this is a place well worth seeking out. Our menu offers a wide range of traditional pub food which can be enjoyed in our restaurant by the open fire or on the sofas in our snug bar.

"Dreadful."
When we arrived, barman couldn't find the room key and gave us different room to our booking. The window was dirty, drawer under mirror had two dangerous screws sticking out with missing knobs, there was one mug only and furred up kettle. The room was sparse, shabby with no wardrobe. When we had a shower the shower tray filled with water and shower screen had built up lime scale. There were no mattress or pillow protectors. No breakfast on offer as kitchen closed. Unwelcoming and awful. Read less

As above it was a very bad experience.

This impressive pub/restaurant just 5 minutes from Newbury town centre was until recently named Rybaks, but has now reverted back to its old name, The Lord Lyon - named after a famous racehorse which won the Triple Crown in 1866 and was owned by Lord Sutton who also owned much of the surrounding land. It was only in the last 30 years, though, that the name was changed and older villagers in Stockcross still refer to it as The Nag's Head.

It is much more appropriate to associate this pub with a thoroughbred. It's a smart, comfortable pub with a mixture of single, twin and double B&B accommodation which is popular with a range of people, from locals who look upon it as a focal point of the community and somewhere for the relatives to stay, to jockeys and trainers who often unwind here, as well as those who come for the excellent food or a weekend away. There is a full menu to choose from and a number of 'specials'.

As you might expect from a fine old pub like this, there are rumours of ghosts, though The Lord Lyon's is apparently a shy one. He or she has never been seen, though objects have been known to move around mysteriously.

The Lord Lyon is set amongst some of England's best country side with numerous picturesque walks and cycling areas. The local private West Berks estate offers adventure from clay pigeon shooting to full simulated days and fishing which can be arranged on booking.
