We stayed in Room 8 (twin-bedded) for one night while visiting a relative in hospital. We know the area well but have never used Coombe Cross before. I'm afraid we are unlikely to do so again, despite the very warm and friendly service. We had dinner, which we regretted, and breakfast (which was fine) and one of us used the pool and sauna, which were great. But the overall shabbiness of the place and the poor evening meal would put us off from visiting again. Read less

The Restaurant is a focal point, resplendent in blue and aquamarine with comfortable chairs and crisp linen tablecloths. The view from here is delightful at breakfast and dinner, reaching across the Bovey valley to the wooded and bracken covered hills up to the rugged granite outcrop of Haytor. The golden morning sun warms the natural colours and tempts the visitor out for a day of exploration whilst the setting sun produces marvellous silhouettes of the moorland landscape emphasising the cosiness of Coombe Cross’s atmosphere.

Service is friendly and informal but effective, positively avoiding the stuffiness which can sometimes attempts to disguise rather average culinary offerings. The table d’hote dinner menus offer a variety of carefully prepared, predominantly traditional English, homemade dishes complemented by other, more contemporary, combinations from around the world. We understand that most of our guests will be fairly active during their holiday so we provide reasonable portions to satisfy enhanced appetites.

The wine cellar provides the opportunity to explore the variety of the World’s wine styles by offering vintages from the majority of the popular wine making countries with some also available in half bottles and others available by the glass. Furthermore, wine list prices are likely to be lower than you would expect reflecting our aim of exceeding your expectations.
At breakfast time, a buffet of cereals, fruit juice, fresh and tinned fruit, yoghurt, and preserves welcomes our guests whilst freshly brewed coffee and tea start the revitalising process. Traditional cooked dishes are prepared to order and served hot from the kitchen making use of local free range eggs and other locally sourced ingredients.

Quiet and low key the bar offers a good range of aperitifs, spirits, beers (bottled and draught), liqueurs and soft drinks. Steps lead on to the patio at the front of the Hotel giving lovely southerly
