We visited Malborough to watch KATS at the village hall so the Royal Oak was ideally located. You step back in time as you go through the door into this wonderfully quirky bar, full of the most eclectic collection of pictures and artefacts. The guest room was small but the bed was comfortable and the shower-room was clean. Read less

"Royal Oak Stay"
Comfortable bed in small double with updated ensuite Wc and shower.
Suggest location of washing machine and drier needs to vented to the outside either through an external wall or through the roof but not down the corridor! Smell of washing powder (far too much) and damp from drying clothes and sheets.
If not attended to the mould could possibly damage the decor sooner rather than later. This would undo all the good work that has been undertaken to date. Read less
Likes: Convenient location for visiting the area of South Devon
Dislikes: Host did not mention evening meals therefore assumed not available. Room objects need to be neutral and not personal as taste is different. ( see Hotel Inspector)

"A disgraceful place"
We arrived after the time described. After banging the door the owner appeared saying arrival time should be 5pm! We were shown to our room which was freezing cold. He’d forgotten to put the heating on. We reported that a bedside light wasn’t working. He just said it was broken! He was quite vague about the evening meals, so we went elsewhere. The bar area was smelly and the breakfast pathetic Read less

The Royal Oak, in the pretty South Hams village of Malborough, is just a short drive from Kingsbridge, Hope Cove and Salcombe. The Royal Oak has recently been refurbished and now, possibly for the first time in its 400 year history, we are pleased to be able to offer comfortable accommodation for visitors to this glorious corner of Devon. Wake up refreshed for a day of walking on the beach, relaxing, sightseeing, a trip to Salcombe or whatever takes your fancy. Bed and Breakfast with a choice of three rooms: History: King Charles II escaped his enemies after the battle of Worcester in September 1651. A reward of £1,000 was offered for capture of the King. He had a distinctive appearance; 6’2” and swarthy; 5’6”; was the average height of males then. The King hid in a ‘Priest Hole’ within Boscobel House until Colonel Careless, later (somewhat understandably) renamed Carlos, suggested this was unsafe. King Charles was disguised as a woodman. The King and Careless took some food and drink and spent all day hiding in an oak tree, which became known as the ‘Royal Oak’
