Very friendly team and excellent friendly bar with range of real ales.
Fantastic breakfasts and good bar meals
Dislikes:
Bedroom quite small. Building is listed - as such refurbishment a challenge - down to owners rather than management.
Picture misleading as hotel surrounded by housing and some buildings needing repai

"Friendly traditional pub hotel"
Two night stay in this lovely old Victorian pub/hotel. The locals clearly love the pub and restaurant. The landlord and landlady clearly love their establishment and care about you from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. It's increasingly rare to get that in hotels/B&Bs. The only suggestions I have for improvement relate to decor. A lick of paint where the paint has flaked off (eg, radiator in the breakfast room) and mending rips in the curtains. Nothing major! The friendliness of the staff was very welcome. Restaurant was amazing. The vegetarian options for breakfast were fantastic. Thank you for remembering I preferred soy milk.
Dislikes:
I didn't know their restaurant was closed on Sunday night when I arrived - maybe make that clear? I just ordered takeaway instead. Might I suggest mending the torn curtains in the breakfast room?

We didn't feel as if we had to be stuck in our room just because the dog was with us, she was welcomed into the bar where we enjoyed a few drinks and a gorgeous roast dinner. 10/10 for breakfast.

My room, although adequate, would benefit from some basic maintenance. However, this didn't create any real problem for me.

"Reasonable value but nothing special"
We hadn't realised, but it was the week-end of the Great North Run - that explains why we found it so hard to find accommodation in the Durham / Newcastle area! Our room was small but clean. Owners were on holiday. Their stand-by seemed to be struggling - particularly at breakfast - but remained in good humour. We ate in the hotel in the evening and that was a disappointment - vegetables arrived cold and were sent back. Read less
