If travelling by car from the north of the country, then the A171 from Middlesbrough via Guisborough, leads over the moors past Lockwood Beck and Scaling Dam Resevoir (nearby petrol station). On a clear day there are magnificent views over the moors and coast. On the approach to Whitby, there are panoramic views of the Abbey Headland.
South
(approx 30 miles)

Travelling by car from the south of the country, via Scarborough, the A171 runs to Whitby over the moors via Burniston, and Cloughton, past the Flask Inn (nearby petrol station), through Hawsker, and then access into the town is by either the New Bridge or the Swing Bridge. From the M1, take the A64 in the direction of York. Keeping on the A64, travel to Malton, then take the A169 over the North Yorkshire Moors via Pickering (petrol station), passing through Sleights to Whitby
