"Decent and very central"
We had two nights at the Crown. The welcome and hosting throughout our stay was really good and staff were very obliging. The building is very fine and we appreciated that there's always something that needs doing in an establishment of this size and age. The bar area is very pleasant and the breakfast served there was a good standard. We stayed in what was a family room although we're just a couple on our own. The facilities in the room were a good basic standard. Read less

The hosting was very friendly and generous and the location of the hotel excellent for exploring Southwell.
Dislikes:
Not really a 'not like' but the room would have been much better with a revamped ensuite.
Response from Crown Hotel:
Thank you for your kind review, I am glad you enjoyed your stay and your comments are helpful. We look forward to seeing you again if you are in the area. Many thanks Anna Guise

"Great for an Inn, poor for a Hotel"
Needed somewhere to stay overnight whilst attending a function elsewhere in Southwell, this location was excellent and had parking so seemed to fit the bill. This is a pub with some rooms attached, rather than a true hotel, but that's what we expected and it meant the breakfast was great. If it was cheap and cheerful we would have been very pleased, but for the price the room didn't quite meet the standards I'd expect at that price. Staff were helpful solving issues and doing what they could. Read less

Staff were friendly and helpful, overall the place was very clean and had been thoughtfully decorated and finished.
Dislikes:
Room was quite small and dark. Cold water tap was really stiff and got stuck-on, shower-head held on with elastic, ran out of toilet paper, found someone's dirty sock in quilt. Glazed door cracked...

Southwell is probably the most picturesque town in Nottinghamshire. With Southwell Minster only a stones throw from the narrow high street, it's an excellent place to visit.

Southwell has many elegant Regency houses but its architectural jewel is the Minster church, boasting some of the best medieval stone carving in England. Just outside town is the Workhouse, an authentic 19th Century institution restored by the National Trust. Find out what life was really like for Victorian paupers in this starkly atmospheric building.

Ironically for the location of an attraction about poverty, the Nottingham Evening Post recently declared Southwell Nottinghamshire’s millionaire capital. In fact, this prosperous small town of 6,000 has never been short of admirers. Lord Byron once claimed that “I shall never be so happy again as I was in old Southwell.” Centuries on, Sir John Betjeman reported that “the Georgian elegance of Southwell ensures that few small towns are as unspoilt.”

General retail markets are held on Thursdays and Saturdays. A farmers market is being held on the third Thursday of every month.
