"Return visit"
We took friends to see Bridgwater carnival and to show them a bit of Somerset. Colridge cottage in Nether Stowey is a must, and the farm shop just down the road is a must for things to take home with you.
Although the landlords had changed since my visit last year, the Malt Shovel remains a pleasant and excellent value for money stopping point to explore rural Somerset. Read less
Likes:
The menu is still of a very high quality, (you do not get partridge in many pubs.) However it is advisable to book tables in the evening as people come from far and wide to eat there.
Dislikes:
The only small problem we encountered was a poor wifi signal in the bar and rooms. However it was not to much of an inconvenience.

The Malt Shovel is situated just off the a39, 3 miles outside of Bridgwater. Along a quiet country road you will find the Beauty that is The Malt Shovel. The Original Bar Area dates back to atleast early 1940s with original oak beams & low ceilings. We are favoured for our Cask Marque Award Real Ales & selection of fine wines.

Our 80 Seater Restaurant is very popular with guests and our extensive Menu has something for everyone; we specialise in freshly cooked seasonal food, sourcing local produce where possible. We have a large beer garden, that is a real suntrap with a large patio area and a wooden Pirate Ship for the kids to play in. Our 8 en-suite are new for 2009, each room has en-suite bath & shower rooms, freeview flat screen televisions, Tea & Coffee making facilities & high speed free WIFI. We welcome pets in one of our rooms and have a room which is fitted out to suit guests with any disabilities.

Situated about five miles northeast of Bridgwater, Cannington has a charming centre with many older buildings and a medieval church. At 10 metres above sea level, the village lies between the plain of the River Parrett and the Quantock Hills.

An Iron Age fort once crowned Cannington Hill and there is evidence of Romano-British occupancy .In AD 87 a battle is said to have taken place here when Saxon King Odda drove back a party of Danish sea raiders.

Cannington Centre for Land-based Studies is a well-known educational establishment that also offers facilities for the general visitor too. These include a 9 hole /18 tee golf course, cycle hire facilities and Cannington Heritage Gardens- attractive walled gardens with a glass house. Grapes are successfully grown to produce award-winning wines at Oatley Vineyard in Cannington.

The River Parrett Trail passes close by as it approaches Bridgwater Bay on its final stages.
