Thank you, Yvonne, for your lovley review. We're so glad you enjoyed the sitting room; too few guests use it, and it really is (as you say) quite good.

Warm welcome with tea and coffee. Attentive but discreet service. Attractive and comfortable room with large en-suite. Breakfast cooked to order and of excellent quality (particularly the crepes). The afternoon tea and taxi into Durham for the Lumiere festival was an inspiration on the part of our hosts - thank you ! Read less

Response from Dowfold House:
Thank you, Barbara, for your extremely positive review. As you took advantage of our special "Lumiere" package for the Festival of Light in Durham, we were delighted to provide the Afternoon Tea (we hope it justifies the capital letters!) and glad that the taxis worked out so well. It was a great way to see Durham at its best - and, for us, making posh sandwiches & scones & cakes is such fun!

Jill & Rupert Richardson (not to mention our dog and two cats...) look forward to welcoming you to this lovely, comfortable Victorian house with its delightful gardens, which was recently recognised as the Bed & Breakfast of the Year, at the North East Tourism Awards 2011. As a small, high-quality bed and breakfast establishment, we aim to provide a comfortable, welcoming - and peaceful - home for you to enjoy; and we do GREAT breakfasts! - full of local produce.

As a recent, regular, guest put it: “Jill & Rupert at Dowfold House are a class act. They offer bed and breakfasting in grand style, but somehow make it friendly and intimate.” It's a brilliant encapsulation of all that we try to do - and I half-wish I'd thought of it myself, although it sounds better from a third-party.

Our rooms are comfortable and well-equipped, all with ensuite facilities, while our home & gardens offer plenty of opportunity for relaxation - or wickedly competitive croquet! Guests love it here. We're proud of our Bed & Breakfast's green credentials, but intensely aware we need to do more. "Green, but without the hair shirt" is our motto. You can find prices and booking information HERE.

And, from Dowfold House Bed & Breakfast, there's plenty to do. From railway rides to walks & cycle rides; from gardens to more strenuous pursuits. There's something for everyone.

Dowfold House Bed & Breakfast is in a quiet location overlooking Crook, with stunning views over Weardale as far as the North Pennines. We welcome business visitors, tourers, cyclists, walkers, dogs, horses [NEW] and children. People just keep coming back!

Crook is an ideal, peaceful, place to stay when visiting the North East of England. The City of Durham is a 20 minute drive away and our Bed & Breakfast accommodation is close to the A68, a major route to and from Scotland.

Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and the Durham Coast are all within easy reach of our Bed & Breakfast accommodation, while C
Environmental Statement
Dowfold House’s Green Policies Right from the word go, we have determined to run Dowfold House as efficiently and with as little harm to the environment as possible. As members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme, we're serious about minimising our footprint. Energy Our electricity comes from Scottish Power under their Green Energy scheme. Almost all our light bulbs are now energy saving ones. We have been totally rewired and try to run as much domestic machinery at night on cheaper rate electricity. Time switches are used. We switch off as many lights and standbys as possible when not in use. Our chimneys and flues are swept once a year for maximum efficiency. Although it is oil fired, our boiler is modern and fuel efficient. We are investigating its replacement with an alternatively fuelled boiler within the next few years. Hot water cylinders are lagged to the maximum capacity. And much more. But: DON'T WORRY! You won't find a hair shirt ANYWHERE!
